How To Deal With Exam Stress

Stress is a fact of life. We all experience it from time to time, and while having stress can help us achieve more, too much stress can be very detrimental to our day-to-day lives.

One of the life events where the effects of too much stress can be overwhelming is during exams. To help learners cope with their stress, we have put together some guidelines that will help you take control of your exam stress.

Identifying stress

It is unfortunate that more often than not, you could have been suffering from stress for quite some time without even knowing it. The first step to combating it is to identify symptoms before you can take action:

  • Suffering from blurred vision
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Find that you are anxious and irritable
  • Your heart rate is elevated
  • You suffer from migraines and or headaches
  • You have no interest in other activities
  • Your appetite is poor
  • You struggle to fall asleep or wake up in the morning
  • You are tired all the time
  • You find that you are forgetful

How to deal with stress

If you feel that you’ve been suffering from any of the above-mentioned symptoms for more than a few weeks, you should take steps to manage your stress.

  • First and most importantly, recognise that you are suffering from stress. If you realise that you’re stressing, take a break.
  • Your eating habits will go a long way in helping you deal with stress. Make sure that you get a healthy dose of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Feeding your body with good, nutritious foods, means that your brain gets the fuel it needs to perform.
  • Try to get enough sleep. Make sure you come down from an intensive study session before you go to bed. This means not revising in bed.
  • Getting some exercise between your study sessions. Even getting a 10-minute stroll in between your sessions will help you relax.
  • If you’re in the middle of a panic attack, remember that deep breaths are your friend. Panic is more often than not triggered by hyperventilating, so if you feel an attack coming on, sit back and take control of your breathing. Take deep breaths in and out of your nose, slowly inhaling and exhaling each time.

Stress doesn’t have to take your life over. Make sure that you are able to identify the symptoms and take steps to regain control.
