The Difference Between a Psychologist and a Counsellor

You’re struggling with an issue and want someone objective to talk to about it. Should you see a psychologist or a counsellor? While a psychologist and counsellor might seem similar in many regards, there are some fundamental differences between the two professions. If you’re seeking to improve your mental health, it will help you to become familiar with these differences to assess which professional may be able to help you best.

Time spent studying/ training

Counsellors typically study for a lot shorter period than psychologists and can have done anywhere from a 3-day course to a master’s level degree. However, Australia does have quite high standards when it comes to experience, as counsellors who are members of PACFA need to complete 350 hours of person-to-person training.

Psychologists are required to complete at least 6 years of training, and most go on to obtain PhDs. These 6 years are often split between university and training in a variety of clinics. For a psychologist to practice in Australia, they need to be legally registered.

Differences in practice

A counsellor’s main objectives are to assist their patients in getting through a difficult time. This can include the death of a loved one and divorce amongst others common life challenges. They can also assist in drug rehabilitation, career guidance, and provide marriage and family counselling. They’re there to help you mentally overcome, and take action on, practical matters and real-life scenarios.

A psychologist deals with patients who might have a diagnosed mental illness or are experiencing difficulties on an ongoing basis due to anxiety, depression or other common conditions. There may not be a direct or obvious cause to their mental strife, and the reason could be a chemical imbalance or deep, underlying issues. With their training in clinical research and behavioural science, psychologists can assist you in uncovering the roots of your problems and diagnose your condition if necessary.
