How To Build A Healthy Co-parenting Relationship
If you have found yourself separated or divorced from your partner, the most important thing you can do is keep your relationship amicable for your child’s wellbeing. Co-parenting takes some careful work – it’s a relationship that takes time and effort to build, even if it means drawing up a plan and setting some ground rules. Ultimately, it is about creating a healthy and happy environment where your child can flourish with the love of both parents – and that should be non-negotiable.
Here are eight simple steps to achieving the perfect co-parenting environment:
- Have a schedule – From school pick up and drop-offs to extra-curricular activities, figure out who is doing what to avoid confusion. A routine is also important for your child.
- But be prepared to be flexible – things do not always stick to a schedule. Your child may fall ill, you may have an extra-long meeting or a working weekend. It has to be give-and-take with your partner.
- Plan for big days – take turns to celebrate special days with your child – be it birthdays, family holidays and special occasions.
- Do not shame each other – calling your ex-partner names or picking on their faults is not good for your co-parenting relationship or for your child’s wellbeing. If you have something to say to your ex-partner, reserve it for times when your child isn’t there and always remember to keep it civil for their sake.
- Communicate – always keep the communication channels open, be it via mobile phones, telephone lines, email or video calling. You should always be able to reach your partner and vice-versa but do not bug your child when they are with them or make them feel guilty that they are not with you.
- Be able to share the same space amicably – birthday parties and school events will require you both to spend time together. Make sure you show a united front for your child.
