How Internet Addition Can Ruin Your Relationship

Most people don’t realise it, but the internet, or more precisely, internet activities like online gaming, pornography and even excessive time spent on your favourite social media channel, can become addictive.

Unfortunately, many people don’t realise or don’t want to admit that they have a browsing problem, which is placing tremendous strain on their relationships with their loved ones. If you feel that you’re suffering from internet addiction, or have a loved one you suspect is struggling with it, you can implement these tips to help curb and eventually overcome the addiction.

No internet when going to sleep

Make sure that you or your loved ones go to bed without a browsing device in tow. Not only does the light of the smartphone or tablet keep you awake, the browsing itself can cut hours from your sleep cycle. Instead, grab a good book, or if you’re struggling with a more serious behaviour, think about turning the Wi-Fi off at an agreed-upon time.

Try to go to bed at the same time

If you’re in a relationship and finding it difficult to keep your partner off the internet, try to have them agree to a bedtime where the both of you get ready for a great night’s rest together. Take the time to chat about your day, or anything else, as long as it’s together. If you combine this tip with the one above, you’ll create a space where you and your partner have control over the technology in your life, and not the other way around.

Replace the time spent on the internet with something else

If you’re concerned about your, or your loved one’s excessive time spent online, try to replace that time with a physical activity, like taking up a new sport or a hobby that gives you something to do, instead of thinking about being online.

Take technology breaks

Remember that it’s difficult to quit excessive internet use in one go, just like any other addiction. So instead of going cold turkey, create times of the day when no technology whatsoever is allowed. Take this time to go for a walk, or any activity that does not involve a device.

The process of overcoming internet addiction is not an easy one, especially with technology becoming so accessible. But it can be done, as long as you commit to some helpful strategies.
